As we spin around madly in this century, trying to figure out how to survive a possible apocalypse of language and human expression, we must all learn the secrets of anxiety. We have to understand what its initial use to us was when it happened, why we need worry, why we need doubt about the burdens of history. Yet after that, we have also to learn how to let it pass; when to rest on faith. We may never be free of our influences. Our precursors may embarrass us with their brilliance, and we may sometimes feel ashamed to consider the extraordinary things they created, often with far fewer means than we ourselves possess.
